ABOUT US
So, you're new to the Writers' Deadline!! and you find this site confusing? Apparently you are not alone.
One newbie called it "a confusing, cryptic mess"! To a neophyte writer it probably is... let's try to
clarify...
Most people come to this web site because of the free mailing list
of events, news, information, jobs, etc.
Here is some background information and link outlines...
How we started:
Patrick Meikle started the Writers' Deadline!! in the late 1980s, before the Internet, as an Ottawa-based dial-up
service on the old electronic bulletin board service (BBS) when you needed a telephone line and a modem. He was
a member of several of the local writing groups and realized that while many of us shared interests in various
aspects of writing, or we were members of one or more groups, there was no one place where you could get information,
and for the most part, the organizations did not communicate with each other...
and so the Writers' Deadline!! BBS was born. After several years he was dubbed "The local connector",
by a writing colleague, who had just read the book The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
by Malcolm Gladwell (Ref.)
Let's start with
"The List"
The number one attraction for people coming to the WD site is our free mailing list or "listserv". Technically
a listserv, or list server, is a small program that automatically sends messages to multiple e-mail addresses on
a mailing list. The WD-List is directed to writers and wannabes. It is FREE and offers resources and information
of interest mostly of a "writing" nature and is directed primarily to the Ottawa-area writing community.
We offer:
The WD-List is FREE and offers resources and information mostly of a "writing" nature and is directed
primarily to the Ottawa-area writing community. This includes: events, poetry, readings, jobs, launches, markets,
meetings, discussion, lots of resources fresh from the Internet, a little humour and more! We encourage users to
participate by sharing their news with colleagues or by offering their comments, opinions or help on any of the
messages they find of interest.
The Links
These are pretty self-evident. If you are a real writer/researcher, you shouldn't need an explanation (grin).
