Back in March 2010, The Ottawa Independent Writers (OIW) ran a Social Networking Workshop. They limited it to 50 participants and were overwhelmed with enough requests to double that number. While certain aspects of the workshop were helpful, we believe the information provided only scratched the surface. So we are going to use this page to throw out more information on the topic.

Social Media vs. Social Networking: What's the difference?
To begine with, I am hearing these two expressions being used. Are they the same or not? I was confused, so I went to Google for some answers.
I found this on examiner.com in Mark Stelzner's blog (There is a difference!):
"At first glance, there seems to be a fairly obvious distinction between Social Media and Social Networking. And given that I consider myself fairly web savvy - I blog, I tweet, I 'friend', etc. - I didn't think I'd have a hard time nailing down the definitive characteristics of each term. But like many things in the rapidly evolving online world, sometimes the apparently obvious can be the most complex."

Twitter's character limit lends itself to lean writing
Chris Vognar from the Dallas Morning News says: "I was once quick to mock Twitter as yet another sign of society's incredible shrinking attention span. That was then. Now I find myself searching for the perfectly written tweet. And I'm not alone. We're talking good, lean prose, the happy marriage between voice and format.
